Low Carbon

In the dry land of Longdong in the west of China, there will be a luxuriant green land next year. It will be crowned "2010 Shanghai World Expo Low Carbon Expo forest".

The "2010 Shanghai World Expo Low Carbon Expo forest" project was officially launched at the theme of World Environment Day sponsored by Tongji University and the people's Government of Yangpu District in Shanghai. It is estimated that 30 tons of carbon emissions will be reduced in 360 thousand years.

According to introducing, this low carbon Expo forest is located in sweet water town, Huan County, Qingyang City, Gansu province.

It is located in the eastern part of Gansu Province, at the junction of Shaanxi, Gansu and Ningxia provinces, adjacent to the Maowusu Desert and the edge of the Tengger Desert. It is blown by wind and sand all the year round, and the desertification is serious.

Sponsored by the Chinese environmental protection foundation, the Shanghai World Expo Bureau, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau, the Qingyang municipal government of Gansu, and the Tongji University, they decided to build 1000 mu of forest project on the dry land of East Gansu Province, marking the "2010 Shanghai World Expo Low Carbon Expo forest", which will not only pmit the low carbon and green concept of Shanghai World Expo to the west, but also effectively reduce carbon emissions, and build it into a demonstration area for the western ecological environment governance.

Tongji University set up the "Gansu water science and Engineering Research Institute" in Qingyang, and will be fully responsible for the concrete construction and management of Low Carbon Expo forest project, including pre planning, woodland tree selection, woodland landscape design, site construction, late woodland care, maintenance and daily management.

The Qingyang municipal government will give support and assistance in policies, land and funds.

The China Environmental Protection Foundation will raise funds for project construction for the public.

The project will be completed by the end of 2011.

According to the reporter, Tongji University will choose Xinjiang poplar, Sophora japonica, hawthorn, Platycladus orientalis, Pinus tabulaeformis, Robinia pseudoacacia and other tree species according to local climate and soil conditions combined with growth rate.

In April of this year, small-scale trials of these trees were carried out on dozens of acres of land.

On this basis, planting evergreen trees such as shrubs, pine and cypress trees can be planted at any time this autumn.

Tongji University also plans to build a rainwater collection and utilization system, and use the limited rainwater resources locally to ensure the irrigation water of this woodland.

According to the environmental experts of Tongji University, the annual carbon sink of the one thousand mu Expo forest is about 3335 tons. If the project is implemented for 30 years, the carbon sink will reach 100050 tons, equivalent to the reduction of 360180 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Experts say that the Expo forest after completion will be a natural reservoir and natural wind belt, which can effectively alleviate the local drought and desertification, and has great symbolic significance. As a real woodland, the concept and spirit of "green and Low Carbon Expo" in World Expo, Shanghai, in 2010 will be extended.
