For more than half a century, the school has developed into a multi disciplinary university with the coordinated development of industry, science, management and literature.

Now there are 12 specialties of textile, clothing, art and design, materials science and engineering, sunrise business management, mechanical engineering, information science and technology, computer science and technology, environmental science and engineering, chemical engineering and Bioengineering, foreign languages, humanities and science. There are also Institutes of education, network, sports, international cultural exchange, and international cooperation in running Donghua University, Raffles international design college.

It has 5 postdoctoral mobile stations, 4 first level doctorate authorization points, 31 two level doctoral authorization points, 6 first level master's degree authorization points, 63 two grade master's degree authorization points, and 50 undergraduate majors.

There are 1 first level disciplines, national key disciplines, 5 two level disciplines, national key disciplines, 1 key national (training) disciplines, 7 key disciplines in Shanghai, 10 state-level and ministerial level key laboratories, engineering centers and testing centers, 2 national "111" intelligence bases, 3 Shanghai experimental teaching demonstration centers and national university science parks.

Nearly 27000 students, including nearly 6000 graduate students, 14364 undergraduates and 2816 overseas students.

There are 2903 faculty members, including 8 academicians, 4 Changjiang Scholars and Changjiang lecture professors. They are honorary winners of Guanghua Engineering Technology Award, National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, the Ministry of education, new century talents, national excellent teachers, advanced personnel of returned students from all over the country, outstanding leaders and leading talents in Shanghai, and 700 senior titles.

Donghua University is one of the earliest institutions of management in China.

In 1953, the school set up a teaching and research section of management engineering, bringing together professor Zhou Shiqiu, Professor of public administration, Harvard University and Dr. Zhang Qichun, Tang Ying, first generation management expert of new China.

In 1959, the major of industrial management engineering was set up.

After the resumption of the college entrance examination system in 1979, it became the first batch of training management engineering graduate students. In 1983, the Department of industrial management engineering was established, and in 1993, it was extended to the school of economics and management.

In 1994, Hongkong's Asahi Group donated HK $11 million to participate in the construction.

Clothing Art Design Institute

The school of clothing art design, Donghua University, enrolled in 1984, one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in the field of clothing.

At present, three level talents training system has been formed.

The Institute is composed of the Department of fashion design and engineering, the Department of fashion art and design, the Department of visual communication art design, the Department of environmental art and design, the Department of industrial art design, the performing department, the Department of art design, the Department of art design and the laboratory.

There are three undergraduate courses in fashion design and engineering, art design and performance, including twelve major disciplines: fashion design and engineering, fashion art design, textile art design, new media art design, animation, digital media art, environmental art design, industrial design, exhibition art and technology, fashion show and design, performance (film and television, drama), public art and so on.

At present, there are nearly 2500 undergraduates, 500 graduate students and 50 PhD students.

In 1995, clothing design and engineering discipline became the key disciplines in Shanghai. In 2002 and 2007, the clothing design and engineering discipline was awarded two times as the only national key disciplines of clothing in China. In 2005, the Academy became one of the first batch of 30 pilot units of the national master of Arts degree, and in 2007, the design art discipline was rated as a key discipline in Shanghai.
