Unexpected Rise In Consumer Confidence Index

According to the published data, the French consumer confidence index rose unexpectedly in July after a three straight month of last month, showing that French residents' confidence in their financial and savings capabilities increased.


Data show that in July, the French consumer confidence index rose from 83 last month to 86, recovering to the end of 2010, but still below the long-term average of 100 points.

Confidence indices for personal financial status, purchasing power and saving capacity of bulk consumer goods have increased.


Analysts believe that, unlike Germany, France's consumer confidence index is largely unaffected by the euro zone sovereign debt crisis, mainly due to a decline in consumer expectations and an increase in confidence in its financial and consumer spending.


Francois Baroin, France's minister of economy, finance and industry, pointed out that the French consumer confidence index has not risen in November 2009.

He believes that increased consumer confidence shows employment in France.
